Roys Peak is one of New Zealand’s most iconic and photographed hikes, offering jaw-dropping panoramic views over Lake Wānaka, Mount Aspiring, and the Southern Alps. It’s a rewarding but physically demanding trek that requires a decent level of fitness and preparation.

⛰️ Track Details
- Distance: 16 km return (8 km each way)
- Elevation Gain: ~1,300 metres
- Duration: 5–7 hours return (depending on pace and breaks)
Trail Type: Well-formed, wide gravel track — zig-zagging uphill for most of the way

💪 Difficulty

Roys Peak is a challenging walk due to its steep incline and consistent uphill grind - there are no flat sections, and little shade. It’s a mental and physical test, especially in hot summer months. While there’s no scrambling or technical terrain, the climb can feel relentless and is not ideal for those with knee or back issues. That said, the reward at the top is absolutely worth the effort - the famous viewpoint (with the ridgeline and lake in the background) is about 1 hour from the summit and provides some of the most iconic photo opportunities in the South Island.

🕓 Timing & Tips
- Start Early: Aim to begin at or before sunrise to avoid heat, crowds, and to secure a car park.
- Fitness Required: Moderate to high - this isn’t a casual stroll.
- Take Water & Snacks: There are no facilities once on the track.
- Weather Check: Conditions can change rapidly - carry layers and check the forecast.
- Seasonal Closure: Closed 1 October to 10 November each year for lambing.
