Ngarunui is Raglan’s big, open surf beach - a long stretch of black sand with rolling Tasman Sea waves. It’s super popular with surfers and learners, thanks to its consistent breaks and surf schools that operate right on the beach. Even if you’re not surfing, it’s an awesome spot for a walk, swim, or just to hang out and watch the waves roll in. On a sunny day, the black sand heats up fast, so bring shoes if you’re planning a long stroll.

Quick Tips:

  • Great place for beginner surf lessons - boards and lessons available on-site 🏄‍♂️

  • Lifeguards patrol in summer, so stick to the flagged swimming areas 🏖️

  • The walk down from the carpark is steep - easy going down, tougher coming back up 🚶‍♀️

  • Black sand gets very hot in the sun - shoes are a must 👟

  • Sunset is epic here, with colours over the waves 🌅
