The Blue Lakes in Aoraki/Mt Cook are a quick detour off the Tasman Glacier track. Despite the name, they’re now a deep green thanks to algae, but on a still day the reflections of the peaks are stunning. It’s only a 40-minute return walk, and if you’re there in summer, the larger lake is even swimmable.

Tips: Go mid morning for calm reflections, wear sturdy shoes for the climb, and check DOC conditions before heading out.
