Established in 1887, it was the first national park in New Zealand and is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The park is home to three active volcanoes - Mount Tongariro, Mount Ngauruhoe, and Mount Ruapehu.

You might also recognise a few spots here from LOTR, there is various places throughout the park where filming took place, I've listed a couple below.

Tukino Ski Field, Mount Ruapehu: Frodo, Sam and Gollum look out over the Gates of Mordor before setting out to climb around them.
