Nestled on the shores of Lake Te Anau, this peaceful sanctuary is a hidden treasure for wildlife lovers. It’s home to some of New Zealand’s rare and endangered native birds, including the cheeky kākā, the beautiful tūī, and most famously the rare takahē, a flightless bird once thought extinct. The sanctuary provides a safe environment for birds that can’t survive in the wild, and entry is free (though donations are appreciated). It’s an easy, scenic stop just outside the town center, perfect for a relaxing walk while learning more about Aotearoa’s unique wildlife.

✨ Quick Tips:

  • Entry is free, but a small donation helps with conservation efforts.

  • The best time to visit is during feeding times in the morning (check with the local DOC office for schedule).
