Portal is a tiny mountain hamlet set in Cave Creek Canyon, best known for world-class birding and some of the darkest night skies in the region, so bring binoculars or a small telescope. Expect limited cell service, few shops and small, independently run lodgings or cabin rentals, so fuel up and pick up groceries and any meds before you turn off the main highway. Roads into and around the canyon are narrow and can be rough or muddy in the summer monsoon, so a vehicle with decent clearance and cautious driving are wise. Nights get cool even in summer, so pack layers, a headlamp, and insect repellent, and be ready to keep quiet and respect private land—you went there for the birds and the stars, not nightlife.
