Description of the Attraction

Trondenes Church is the world’s northernmost medieval stone church, dating back to the late Viking Age (around 1066) and the medieval period (before the Reformation in 1536). The church’s foundation is believed to have been laid just before or around the year 1200, with construction continuing in several stages.

Key historical highlights:

  • Parts of the roof date back to the 1400s, while others are from the early 1500s.

  • Norway's oldest sail, a woolen sail from 1390–1400, was discovered in the roof structure in 1989.

  • The church features frescoes and an altar font from the 1300s.

Trondenes Church is renowned as the most richly equipped medieval church in the Nordic countries. Although not all of its original furnishings have survived, three of the original seven medieval altar cabinets remain intact:

  1. The Mary Cabinet

  2. The High Altar Cabinet

  3. The Birgitta Cabinet

During both Catholic and post-Reformation periods, the church was considered the largest and most beautifully decorated church north of Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim.

Surrounding the church and graveyard are stone walls believed to be remnants of a 12th-century fortification, built to defend against attacks from Karelians and Russians.

Difficulty and Accessibility

  • Distance from Harstad: Approximately 3 km.

  • Accessibility: Easily reachable by car, bus, bike, or by walking along the scenic "Path Along the Sea" from Harstad city center.

  • Address: Trondenesveien 128, 9404 Harstad. Free parking very close to the church.

Trondenes Church is a remarkable blend of historical significance, architectural beauty, and cultural heritage, making it a must-visit site for anyone exploring Harstad. Its rich medieval history and stunning coastal setting create a unique and memorable experience.
