Taketomi Island is a tiny and charming island in Okinawa’s Yaeyama chain, perfect for a relaxing escape 🌺

Ever since I first visited Okinawa in September 2019, I have fallen in love with the turquoise water, white-sand beaches, delicious local foods like rafutei, traditional music, and the relaxed vacation atmosphere. Taketomi stood out to me for its beautiful flowers, making it Japan’s ultimate tropical flower spot.

The island is small, so it’s easy to walk around, but renting a bicycle is even more fun. Cycling allowed me to stop whenever I wanted and admire all the flowers along the way. The most popular flowers are wide-petal hibiscus, called “akabana” in Okinawan, but you’ll also see orchids, spider hibiscus, golden trumpets, deigo, and bougainvillea. The hibiscus comes in so many colors, from red, pink, yellow, and white to rare shades. On the islands, hibiscus is used to make tea, jam, and even soft cream, and it symbolizes delicate beauty, often associated with young women.

Taketomi is especially magical in spring and summer when the tropical flowers are in full bloom. Cycling around the island is not just convenient but also a joyful way to enjoy the scenery, nature, and the local culture.
