Stiles Cove path, a standout section of the East Coast Trail, holds a special place in my heart—not just because Flatrock is my hometown but because it truly embodies the breathtaking beauty of Newfoundland’s coastline. This 15.1 km one-way hike offers a moderate challenge packed with diverse landscapes.
Starting from Pouch Cove, you immediately get a welcoming view of the quaint village. The trail soon hugs the ocean, providing sweeping views and leading you to a lookout where a staircase offers access down to the water—an early highlight not to miss. Continuing through the forest, the path brings you to Shoe Cove, once a bustling 1800s fishing village.
Ascending to its highest point at 100 meters, the trail meanders through the boreal forest, along cliff edges, offering stunning vistas of the coastline characterized by vibrant turquoise waters that could almost fool you into thinking you’re somewhere tropical.
The final stretch to Flatrock winds down through the forest and over several staircases, opening up to majestic views of the community. Crossing a bridge over a significant waterfall and river, you reach a local favorite spot for summer swims—just be cautious of the strong currents.
