Where to Find Bathrooms While Driving Around Iceland

A simple road trip strategy for avoiding unreliable public toilets and knowing when to stop before it becomes urgent.

Once you leave Reykjavík and start driving longer distances, you should not assume there will be a clean bathroom around every corner.

There are public bathrooms around Iceland, but quality and reliability vary. Some are only available during summer, some are not serviced regularly, and some may not be in great condition when you arrive. Bathrooms at popular places of interest can also vary. Some are free, some are paid (200-300 ISK), and during busy periods, cleanliness depends heavily on traffic and maintenance.

This is why I do not include bathroom pins in this Iceland guide. They change too often, and I do not want to send you somewhere that might be closed, unreliable, or poorly maintained.

Personally, I plan most of my bathroom breaks around gas stations whenever possible. Many larger gas stations are staffed, open long hours, and generally kept cleaner than random public toilets.

That said, not every gas station in Iceland has a public bathroom, especially smaller self-service stations. So when you see a larger staffed station along your route, it is usually worth stopping before continuing.

Another good option is to stop at visitor centres, cafés, restaurants, supermarkets, or larger attractions along your route. Grab a coffee, buy a snack, use the bathroom, and stretch your legs before continuing.

For extra peace of mind, you can also use bathroom finder apps. Toilet Finder (iOs / Android) is a useful general option for finding nearby bathrooms, although it seems to exclude some practical stops like gas stations and supermarkets. Krapp is an Iceland-specific option, but from what I have seen, it mostly shows places like campsites and public swimming pools.

My simple advice: whenever you stop for fuel, food, coffee, groceries, or sightseeing, use the bathroom even if you do not urgently need it yet. It sounds obvious, but it is one less thing to worry about during your trip.
