The legendary basalt column canyon in East Iceland probably doens't need to much introduction. You can either go on the west side (only a viewing platform) or the east side, that's where you can get into the canyon. To reach the canyon from that side you'll need to hike for around 45 minutes each way (pretty easy terrain). When you reach the canyon, you have at least two options: the one further away takes you directly into the basalt heaven. That's where you've seen the most classic photos of the place. If you go down a little bit before that, you can get down to the river and get an actual view into the canyon.

PS. This place is worth the hype.

QUICK NOTES:

• What it is: A stunning basalt column canyon in East Iceland.

• Best season: Summer.

• Best time of day: Any (the earlier, the fewer people).

• Nice to know:

  • THE COLOUR: To witness the blue colour in the water you'll need to be there between June and August. Earlier than that and the river is more brownish due to snow melting and any later and it's also murky as the nearby reservoir overflow has been released. 

  • TIME: If you decide to go for the east side, take aside at least a few hours, both for hiking and actually exploring and enjoying the place when you get there.
