Oban is often a stopping point for people heading to the islands (trips to Mull etc all leave from here). As well as checking out the restaurants at the harbour, head up to McCaig's Tower for amazing views over the harbour.
Some history:
During World War II Oban was an important base of the British Army while the town also became a hub for Caledonian MacBrayne ferries after the 1950s.
