Right next to the Maritime Museum in Mariehamn, you’ll find Pommern — one of the world’s best-preserved original windjammers. Built in 1903, this four-masted steel sailing ship carried grain between Australia and Europe and braved some of the wildest seas on the planet.

Today, Pommern is a floating museum where you can step aboard and explore life at sea as it once was. Wander through the cargo holds, the crew’s quarters, and the captain’s elegant cabin — everything is restored with great care. The ship also features an excellent audio tour that brings stories of the ship and its sailors to life.

Moored right in Mariehamn’s western harbor, Pommern is easy to visit and pairs perfectly with the adjacent Åland Maritime Museum. It’s a must-see for anyone interested in maritime history or just looking for a unique experience in the islands.

Visiting info: Pommern is open to visitors from spring through autumn (typically May to September). A combo ticket with the Åland Maritime Museum costs around €16 for adults and €8 for children (under 7 free). Tickets include access to both the ship and the museum, plus the excellent audio guide. You can buy tickets online or at the museum entrance. The ship is docked right in the center of Mariehamn — an easy walk from the ferry terminal or town center.
