If you’re into animals or traveling with kids, Korkeasaari Zoo is a great stop for you. It’s on its own island just a short ferry ride from Helsinki city center, and it’s home to over 150 species from Finland and around the world.
You’ll see Nordic animals like bears and lynxes, plus exotic ones like snow leopards and colorful birds. The paths are easy to walk, and there are plenty of spots to rest or grab a snack.
How to get there:
The most popular way is the ferry from Market Square during the summer, running every 20 minutes or so. But there’s also a ferry from Hakaniemi (operates May to September), which takes about 15 minutes and offers a different, scenic route. (2025 is the last year the ferry operates from Hakaniemi!)
You can also reach the zoo by bus or car, with parking nearby.
Good to know:
The zoo is open year-round, though winter can be quieter.
There are playgrounds and picnic areas, perfect for families.
Don’t miss the seal and penguin shows in summer — they’re fun!
Buying tickets online beforehand helps skip the lines.
Tip: Try the ferry from Hakaniemi if you’re nearby — it’s a nice way to see a different part of the city on the way.
