The Dempster Highway is an unpaved road that offers the ultimate road trip experience. From Dawson City in the Yukon Territory, it will lead you to the Arctic Circle and through stunning tundra and mountain scenery with abundant wildlife. Start by exploring the colourful history of Dawson City before driving on to Tombstone Territorial Park - a unique wilderness with birdwatching opportunities, hiking trails and hearty Canadian culture.

You can choose to drive as far you'd like. You can make a day of it or multiple days if you're planning do go all the way to the Arctic Ocean. I would recommend at least driving through Tombstone Territorial Park an into the Olgivie Mountains which you can do in a full day however it's better to camp along the way so you can enjoyed more of the scenery and beautiful hikes.

This drive is incredible in the fall which is end of August into early September

Things to know: -There are very few services along this road. Expect to go long stretches without gas stations so fill up your tank but also bring a jerry can just in case -Flat tires happen frequently. The rocks are really sharp so it's easy to get small holes. Definitely have spare and I find having air and patch kit really helpful as well -You need to be self sufficient - have extra food, gear, gas, water, etc -There's no cell service. I would recommend bringing something like a Garmin inReach -DO NOT OFF-ROAD - this landscape is extremely delicate and there are strict rules around only driving on roads or pullouts that are already established -You are in bear country so bearspray is a must -Camping can be dispersed (look for pullouts along the way) and there are a few campgrounds but not many

Reach the highest point at North Fork Pass Summit and revel in 360° views of the region. Then cross the Arctic Circle and pass through the Northern Ogilvie Mountains as you make your way to Eagle Plains for a much needed rest stop before continuing north to Inuvik. With plenty to explore along the way, the Dempster Highway offers the journey of a lifetime across the great Canadian north.
