Distance from Ísafjörður: Around 1 hour and 45 minutes by car
Perfect for: Road trippers heading to Dynjandi, nature photographers, and anyone looking for a quiet moment with a lesser-known waterfall

Why Visit Göngumannafoss?

Göngumannafoss is a small but beautiful waterfall located along the road that leads to the famous Dynjandi waterfall in the remote Westfjords of Iceland. While it may not be as grand or dramatic as its bigger neighbor, it has its own unique charm and is well worth a short stop if you're already in the area.

This waterfall tumbles gently down moss-covered cliffs, and on a calm day, the soft sound of flowing water adds a peaceful touch to the rugged landscape around it. It is located right by the roadside, so it is impossible to miss — although many travelers unknowingly pass it without a second glance, eager to reach Dynjandi.

If you have a few minutes, it is absolutely worth pulling over to take in the view, stretch your legs, and enjoy a quieter moment before joining the crowds at the more famous falls.

Short Stop with a Scenic Bonus

You will spot Göngumannafoss just before arriving at the Dynjandi waterfall. There is a marked trail.

The waterfall often gets framed beautifully by the surrounding mountains, especially if you visit during early summer when green moss and blooming wildflowers add color to the scene.

Good to Know

  • There is a parking charge

  • Located right along the main path to Dynjandi

  • Best seen as part of your visit to Dynjandi waterfall

  • Restrooms are available at Dynjandi

While it may be small compared to the dramatic waterfalls Iceland is famous for, Göngumannafoss is a peaceful and photogenic stop that deserves a moment of appreciation. It is one of those little surprises that makes the journey to Dynjandi even more special.

*Dynjandi or Fjallfoss waterfall is the biggest waterfall in the Westfjords and is for sure the Bridal Veil of Westfjords. There are 6 other waterfalls below Dynjandi, which one passes on the way to the biggest waterfall. The names of the other waterfalls are, from above: Hæstahjallafoss, Strompgljúfrafoss, Göngumannafoss, Hrísvaðsfoss, Hundafoss and Bæjarfoss, which is also called Sjófoss.
