The Piedra del Peñol, also known as the Rock of Guatapé, is a famous landmark in Colombia that stands tall, at 200m/657ft above its base and 2.137m/7012 ft above sea level. But before you can enjoy the epic views from above over the vast landscape of the lakes beneath, you'll have to do a little exercise. Approximately 675 steps lead up to the highest point of the rock. It might seem a lot but if you make it into a game, it's less exhausting, at least that's what I did haha. Additionally to the view, there are many shops up there that sell refreshments, food and souvenirs, so you can pack lightly and save on some weight.

Here is a little history for you as well: the rock is believed to be around 65 million years old and has a rich history, including a disputed ownership between the towns of Guatapé and El Peñol. It is made of granite, quartz and feldspar. The stairs up La Piedra del Peñol were first built in 1954.

The entry fee is about $50.000 COP per person.

Note: As tempting as it might be - Drones are prohibited due to the helicopters that fly tourists around the rock.

The area is also really close to Medellin and only a 1-2h drive with the bus. You can also book a tour directly by clicking the link which includes everything for you!
