This waterfront temple in Saint-Pierre is one of the oldest and most important Tamil Hindu temples in Réunion. Built in the 19th century by Tamil laborers brought to the island after the abolition of slavery, it has become both a religious center and a historical landmark. The gopuram (tower) is intricately sculpted with gods, goddesses, animals, and mythological scenes, all hand-painted in vivid colors.

While it’s an active place of worship, visitors are welcome to explore the outer courtyard and take in the details of the structure. The location is stunning: the temple sits close to the ocean, and the smell of incense often mixes with salt air. During festivals like Thaipusam and Cavadee, the site comes alive with chanting, drumming, and rituals involving extreme devotion.

👉 Visit just after sunrise for soft light on the gopuram and a quiet moment before the heat and traffic pick up. You’ll often see devotees making early offerings.
