Nachricht von Mirela Letailleur

Mare à Poule d’Eau is a quiet freshwater pond nestled between dense vegetation and vertical walls of green. Classic Salazie. It’s one of the easiest scenic stops in the cirque, just off the roadside with a short path leading to picnic benches and a wide view over the calm water. Moorhens (poules d’eau) glide across the surface, and on still days the cliffs reflect perfectly in the pond.

Local legend gives the place its name: a woman, abandoned by her lover, cried here until she turned into a waterfowl. It's a common tale on the island where myth and nature intertwine. Today, it’s a place for short breaks, simple moments, and quiet observation. Ideal for those looking to breathe after winding up the road to Salazie.

👉 Bring a thermos of coffee and stop here before tackling any bigger hikes. It’s an early-morning spot that locals love for its stillness.
