Via Ferrata Takaka Hill is New Zealand’s first free, public via ferrata, a cliff climbing course on Takaka Hill that anyone with decent fitness and a head for heights can try. Located at the top of Takaka Hill Highway (search “Via Ferrata Takaka Hill” or 1647 Takaka Hill Highway), it’s open year-round and free to use; you just need the right safety gear.
If you don’t own gear, you can hire it cheaply at the nearby Ngarua Caves Shop (about $8 for up to 4 hrs, with a small cash bond), and they give you a quick briefing before you climb. The classic Cliff Traverse route takes about 20–40 min to climb once you’re clipped in, and there’s a smaller Skill Zone near the carpark (2–5 min) to test your gear and get comfortable first.
It’s exposed, fun, and very doable even if you’ve never climbed before, and because there are three emergency exits, you can stop or walk off mid-climb if you’re not feeling confident. Wear grippy shoes, gloves, and layers because it can be windy up there, and if you want extra confidence or a more guided experience, there are paid guided options too.
