Description:
The Katla Ice Cave is one of Iceland’s most unique natural wonders, located near the town of Vík on the South Coast. The cave forms inside the Kötlujökull Glacier, which sits on top of the active Katla volcano. Stepping inside, you’ll see brilliant shades of blue and black ice, created by centuries of volcanic ash and glacier movement. Unlike many ice caves that are only accessible in winter, the Katla Ice Cave can be visited year-round, though access is always with a certified guide. The experience includes a short hike over the glacier, making it adventurous but safe when guided.
Price:
You cannot visit the Katla Ice Cave on your own — guided tours are required. Tours from Vík typically cost 19,000–24,000 ISK ($140–180 USD) per person and include super jeep transport, safety gear, and a guide.
⚠️ Caution: Katla Ice Cave is only accessible with a guided super jeep tour. Do not attempt to enter on your own due to unstable ice and crevasses.
