Description:
Eldhraun is one of the largest lava fields in the world, created after a massive volcanic eruption in the 18th century. Today, it’s covered with a thick, soft green moss that gives the area a dreamlike and otherworldly appearance. Driving through Eldhraun along the South Coast feels surreal, with endless mossy mounds stretching as far as the eye can see. While it’s tempting to step onto the moss, visitors are asked not to walk on it, since it is very delicate and takes decades to grow back. Eldhraun is a peaceful, moody stop that shows the raw beauty of Iceland’s volcanic past.

Price:
Visiting Eldhraun is free, and there are several roadside pull-offs with free parking where you can safely stop to admire the views and take photos.
