Description:
Skaftafell is part of Vatnajökull National Park and is known for its stunning combination of glaciers, mountains, and waterfalls. It’s a hiker’s paradise, offering trails for all levels, from easy walks to more challenging glacier hikes. The most popular trail leads to Svartifoss, the famous basalt column waterfall. Other routes take you to glacier viewpoints, alpine landscapes, and even up to ice tongues of Vatnajökull itself. The visitor centre provides maps, information, and guided tour options. Because of its central location along the Ring Road, Skaftafell is one of the best bases for exploring Iceland’s southeast.
Price:
Entrance to Skaftafell is free, but parking at the Visitor Centre costs about 750 ISK ($5–6 USD). Guided glacier hikes and tours in Skaftafell typically cost 12,000–18,000 ISK ($85–130 USD) per person.
⚠️ Caution: Trails may be snow-covered or icy in winter. Glacier activities must be done with certified guides — never attempt glacier hikes alone.
