Moraine Lake is one of the most famous (and photographed) spots in Banff, known for its vivid turquoise water and the jagged peaks of the Valley of the Ten Peaks. It’s only open seasonally from June to early October, and private vehicles are no longer allowed on the access road. To visit, you'll need to book a shuttle in advance.
Parks Canada Shuttle – $8 CAD for adults – $4 for seniors – Free for youth under 18 – $3 transaction fee per booking – Includes return trip + Lake Louise connector – Runs every 30 mins, approx. 6:30 AM–6 PM – “Alpine Start” sunrise shuttles available (must book separately)
Roam Transit Super Pass – $30 CAD for unlimited daily travel – Includes connector between Lake Louise and Moraine Lake
Private Shuttles – Typically $35–$99 CAD round-trip – Prices vary based on departure time and whether it includes a guide or sunrise trip
Don’t forget: You’ll also need a valid Banff National Park entry pass, which is separate from shuttle costs.
Popular Hikes at Moraine Lake:
Rockpile Trail (easy – 0.8 km round trip): The famous viewpoint for that postcard-perfect shot of Moraine Lake and the Ten Peaks.
Consolation Lakes Trail (easy – 5.8 km round trip): A peaceful, less-trafficked trail through the forest leading to beautiful alpine lakes.
Larch Valley Trail (moderate – 8.6 km round trip): A stunning trail especially popular in late September when the larch trees turn golden.
Sentinel Pass (challenging – 11.6 km round trip): A steep but rewarding extension of the Larch Valley Trail with panoramic views from the pass.
