Wander down to the Old Town and you can't miss the brilliant yellow walls of Forte de São Tiago, a friendly giant watching over the harbour. Built back in the 17th century to keep pirates at bay, it's now the perfect spot for a relaxed stroll. Climb up to the ramparts for some of the best panoramic views of the Atlantic and the city – it’s a fantastic place to snap a few photos and soak in the seaside atmosphere. Entry is free, making it a lovely and easy stop on your exploration of Funchal.
