Misery Beach, recently crowned "Australia's Best Beach" in 2022, is a hidden gem near Albany, nestled next to the renowned Bald Head trail, a hike I highly recommend. After completing the challenging trail, dipping into the calm waters of Misery Beach for a refreshing swim was pure bliss. During my visit, I was surprised to find the beach empty, which added to its allure and made the experience more tranquil.
During my visit, I learned that the beach holds a dark historical past as a former whaling station and hideout for escaped convicts turned pirates. Today however it offers stunning views and a secluded ambiance that attracts nature enthusiasts and those seeking an authentic coastal experience.
If you want to learn about the beach's intriguing history, intertwined with tales of whaling and piracy, there are a few nearby attractions such as the Albany Historic Whaling Station and the National Anzac Centre provide opportunities to further explore and understand the area's rich heritage.
