Etty Bay Beach is one of the best free spots in Queensland to catch a glimpse of wild cassowaries in their natural habitat. This stunning beach, with its 700-meter stretch of pristine white sand and encircling rainforest, offers an incredible backdrop for spotting these magnificent birds. Cassowaries, standing up to 2 meters tall and weighing up to 58 kilograms, are the third-largest birds in the world, and their vibrant blue and black plumage, along with the distinctive casque on their heads, make them truly unforgettable.

These flightless giants are a rare sight due to their critically endangered status, so encountering them at Etty Bay is a special treat. Be vigilant as you explore, as cassowaries can often be seen foraging for fruit and insects along the beach and the nearby roads. As a word of caution, these powerful birds can be unpredictable and potentially dangerous, so always observe them from a safe distance. Spotting a cassowary amidst the lush rainforest and listening to their deep, resonant calls adds an extraordinary thrill to any visit to this beautiful beach.

Oh also keep an eye out for the rope swings on the beach, they kept me very entertained while waiting around to see the birds!
