Location: South side of Snæfellsnes Peninsula, West Iceland
Distance from Reykjavík: Around 2 hours and 30 minutes by car
Perfect for: Road trippers, photographers, waterfall lovers, and anyone exploring the Snæfellsnes area

Why Visit Bjarnarfoss?

Bjarnarfoss is a stunning 262-foot (80-meter) waterfall that drops gracefully from basalt cliffs into a peaceful green valley below. It is one of the most underrated natural gems on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula and a fantastic stop if you are heading to or from places like Arnarstapi, Budir Church, or the famous Snæfellsjökull glacier.

What makes it so special is the raw contrast between the dark lava rock and the bright white mist of the falling water. On a windy day, the spray can travel far — and sometimes, the upper part of the waterfall is blown upward, giving it an otherworldly appearance.

The surrounding scenery is just as beautiful, with views of volcanic cliffs, green pastures, and a wide sky that’s especially magical at sunset or after rain.

Short Stop or Mini Hike? You Choose

There is free parking right off the main road and a clear walking path. You can treat it as a quick roadside stop to grab some photos from below, or you can stretch your legs and take the short hike up the slope toward the base of the waterfall.

The path is uneven in places and a bit steep at the top, but nothing too technical. If you go all the way up, you’ll be rewarded with close-up views of the cliff face and the crashing water, and possibly even a bit of a natural mist shower.

Plan around 30 to 45 minutes if you want to hike closer, or just 10 minutes if you’re stopping to snap a few photos from the parking lot.

Legends of Bjarnarfoss

As with many places in Iceland, folklore runs deep at Bjarnarfoss. One of the most famous legends tells of the Lady of the Mountain or Fjallkonan, a national symbol and female personification of Iceland. Some say she stands at the base of the waterfall, with the water crashing over her shoulders — a powerful image of strength and nature.

Another tale speaks of Bjarni, a wealthy and selfish farmer who refused to shelter a poor traveler. As punishment, the traveler cursed his land. Bjarni’s livestock died, his crops withered, and eventually, in a fit of madness, he threw all his money into the pool at the base of the falls — where some say it still lies today.

Good to Know

  • Free parking is available just off the main road

  • No entry fees or facilities on site, so bring water and gear with you

  • The waterfall is visible year-round, though the upper stream can slow to a trickle in strong wind

  • Best light for photography is usually in the late afternoon or early evening

  • Be cautious near the upper path — the rocks can be slippery, especially after rain

Bjarnarfoss is a perfect mix of natural drama and local legend, and while it’s not as busy as other Icelandic waterfalls, that’s part of the charm. Whether you're stopping for a photo or taking the short hike up for a closer look, it’s a memorable addition to your Snæfellsnes road trip.
