Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi is a sacred Bo tree in Anuradhapura, believed to have sprouted from a cutting of the original sacred Bo tree where Buddha achieved enlightenment. Planted over 2,300 years ago, it holds the distinction of being the oldest human-planted tree with a documented date. Despite enduring threats such as storms and vandalism, the tree has been safeguarded by Buddhist monks and kings throughout the centuries. Today, its branches are cradled by golden fences and pillars, perpetuating its status as an open-air temple where thousands of pilgrims converge daily to pay homage and seek solace beneath its branches.

The rustle of the Bo tree leaves, orchestrated by the wind, creates a melody as unique as it is sacred, while the hues of the sunset paint an ethereal backdrop to this serene sanctuary.

The site's significance transcends religious boundaries, drawing millions of pilgrims each year for its historical and spiritual resonance. Thus, it is important for visitors to maintain an atmosphere of tranquility and reverence.

Best time to visit: The area opens at 6 am in the morning. We recommend you to visit to the morning prayer ceremony at 6.30 am or the evening ceremony which takes place around 6pm.

DO embrace the pilgrims' tradition of circling the tree's platform.

DON'T be disturbed, should you notice workers discarding flower offerings into trash bins, while pilgrims are offering new flowers at the same time. Remember that Buddhism espouses the virtue of detachment. In this act lies a poignant lesson in impermanence and the art of letting go - at least this is the answer they gave us, when we asked.
