Gîte du Volcan is the only place to sleep this close to Piton de la Fournaise. If you want to do the sunrise hike or just stay up in the mountains without rushing, this is the smart overnight base. It’s not fancy — think basic rooms, hot showers, creaky floors — but it’s clean, warm, and very close to the Pas de Bellecombe trailhead (10-minute drive).
There are dorms and private rooms, all with shared facilities. Bedding is provided. Meals are simple and hearty — usually a curry with rice and lentils served in a communal dining room. If you’re hiking early, they can arrange a takeaway breakfast or coffee before dawn.
You’re at 2,250 meters here, and nights get cold year-round — bring warm layers even in summer. There’s no shop nearby, so stock up on snacks and drinks before you arrive.
👉 Local tip: Book ahead during school holidays or weekends — it fills fast with local hikers.
