The train journey from Bishkek to Balykchy is a must do in Kyrgyzstan - especially if you take the VIP class. You may have seen videos of this train journey on Instagram, but I have to say the hype is real and it's worth doing.
There is a seasonal panoramic train that runs from Bishkek to Balykchy, on the western shore of Issyk Kul during summer. It’s an incredibly scenic ride, passing mountain ranges, canyons, and farmland on the way. The new VIP Class offers comfortable carriages featuring huge panoramic windows and plush couches to enjoy the view.
When does it run? There is one train per day during high season from July to August, otherwise it runs only on weekends in June.
When time does it leave? It leaves Bishkek each day in the high season at 7:45 am
How long does it take? 4 hours
How much does it cost? As of 2025, the standard tickets cost 150 som per adult, LUX cost 500 som per adult and the VIP Class is 800 som per adult (I recommend the VIP)
How to book? You can purchase all tickets online through Kyrgyz Railway or at the station
Where to go from Balykchy? You can then easily get a bus/marshrutka or shared taxi to Karakol or somewhere else around Issyk Kul lake
Important! If you’re travelling in the opposite direction (Balykchy-Bishkek), the train runs in the evening. It leaves Balykchy at 7pm and arrives at 11pm.
