Overview

Yatsubuchi no Taki is an adventurous hike featuring a series of eight cascading waterfalls, dense forest scenery, and the option to continue to Mount Bunagatake for panoramic views of Lake Biwa. The trail involves riverbed navigation and scrambling up rocky paths, making it a favorite for experienced hikers seeking a mix of natural beauty and physical challenge.

This was one of my go to hikes when I lived in the Kansai area. It offers a lot over a short hike but done let the numbers fool you. It can get steep at times and test out your leg endurance!

Location: Shiga Prefecture, near Kyoto.

Distance: 8-10 km (round trip).

Elevation Gain: ~800 meters.

Time Required:

  • Waterfalls only: 3-4 hours round trip.

  • Waterfalls + Mount Bunagatake: 5-6 hours round trip.

Difficulty: Intermediate to advanced. Not suitable for beginners.

Features:

  • 8 waterfalls along a riverbed trail.

  • Climbing with ropes, chains, and footholds.

  • Optional summit hike to Mount Bunagatake (1,214 m).

Best Seasons: Spring, summer, and autumn. Winter requires advanced equipment.

Access:

  • By public transport: JR Kosei Line to Omi-Takashima Station, then a bus or taxi to the trailhead.

  • By car: Parking available near the Shirahige Shrine area.
