The Roulof vanilla plantation in Saint-André is one of the most authentic places to learn how vanilla is cultivated, pollinated, and cured on Réunion. This is not a polished showroom or large-scale operation. It's a family-run site where vanilla vines curl up trees, bees hum in the background, and visitors are shown around with genuine pride and detailed knowledge.
The guided tour walks you through each step of the process, from the hand-pollination of the delicate orchid flowers to the long drying process that gives Bourbon vanilla its rich, layered aroma. You’ll also learn about the challenges of vanilla production in modern times and how Réunion continues to produce some of the highest quality vanilla in the world. There's a small shop at the end where you can taste and buy directly, often from the people who grew it.
