Compared to Dawki, it’s quieter, less crowded, and far more immersive for travelers seeking nature, culture, and adventure.
How to Get There
Schnongpdeng is located about 95 km from Shillong (roughly 3–4 hours by road), just 10–12 km beyond Dawki town. You can reach it by hiring a local cab or driving your own vehicle along the scenic road that winds through the hills of West Jaintia Hills district. The last stretch includes a narrow road down to the riverbank where most activity centers are set up.
What to Expect
At Schnongpdeng, the Umngot River takes center stage. The water is incredibly transparent, making it perfect for water-based activities. The atmosphere is calm, with only a handful of homestays, adventure tents, and riverside huts run by local families. The village itself is small, quiet, and ideal for anyone wanting to disconnect and slow down. One of the highlights here is the Amkoi Suspension Bridge, a footbridge suspended over the river offering jaw-dropping views of the water below. It’s perfect for photos, sunrise or sunset views, and even just quiet moments of reflection above the glassy surface.
Activities
Kayaking – Easily the most popular activity here. Kayak rentals are available from riverside camps and run by local operators. The water is calm, making it perfect even for beginners.
Boating – Traditional wooden boats (like in Dawki) offer slow, scenic rides along the river—great for families or anyone just wanting to soak in the beauty.
Snorkeling – Some camps offer snorkel sets; visibility is often excellent on sunny days.
Swimming – The water is safe for swimming in shallow areas; just follow local guidance.
Ziplining – Available just before entering Schnongpdeng—fly across the valley with views of the river below.
Camping – Stay overnight at a riverside camp or in a homestay with basic but comfortable facilities.
For the Curious
The village is inhabited by the War Jaintia people, known for their close relationship with nature and hospitality. Schnongpdeng hasn’t yet been over-commercialized, which means the experience remains authentic. Local youth associations and village councils take care of tourism, so your visit supports the community directly. During winter (Nov–Feb), the river is at its clearest. In the monsoon (Jun–Sep), water sports might be limited, but the landscape turns lush and dramatic.
