💧 Þórufoss Waterfall
🗺️ How to Get There:
Located just off Route 48 between Þingvellir and Mosfellsdalur, Þórufoss is only about 40 minutes from Reykjavík. There’s a small gravel turnoff and parking area directly by the road.
From there, it’s a short walk down a trail to the base of the falls. The area is quiet and typically uncrowded.
📅 Best Time of the Year to Visit:
Accessible year-round. In spring and early summer, the waterfall has strong flow from snowmelt. In winter, it partially freezes and creates striking ice patterns.
Autumn brings beautiful yellow tones to the surrounding vegetation.
📸 Photography Tips
Best time of day:
Late afternoon or golden hour for warm light on the canyon walls
Overcast days soften the waterfall’s highlights and reduce glare
Recommended gear:
Wide-angle lens to capture the full width of the falls and canyon
Tripod for long exposures to smooth the water
Drone to show the meandering river cutting through the canyon
Composition ideas:
Shoot from the lower right side of the riverbank to frame the full width
Use the river as a leading line from the foreground toward the falls
In winter, include ice formations along the edges for detail
From above, showcase the arc of the canyon and the falls pouring into it
