A Sweet Taste of Ise
Just steps from Ise Jingu’s Naiku, Akafuku Honten has been delighting visitors since 1707 with its famous Akafuku Mochi, a simple yet elegant treat of red bean paste over soft rice cake. Each month on the 1st (Tsuitachi), the shop offers the special Tsuitachi Mochi, a seasonal variation available only that day, making it a unique experience for returning visitors.
Personal Note
When I lived near Ise, Akafuku Honten was a regular stop after visiting the shrine. Sitting by the Isuzu River, savoring Akafuku Mochi, and soaking in the peaceful atmosphere became a cherished ritual. I took all my guests who came to visit this place as it is rich with cultural delight.
Tip
Plan a visit on the 1st of the month to try the Tsuitachi Mochi, and don’t miss their refreshing shaved ice in summer!
Heads up, people start lining up from around 430AM!! The line can be 300 meters long.
