Castelo de São Jorge ("Saint George's Caste") is perhaps the most symbolic monument in Lisbon, Portugal. This beautiful and imposing fortification permeated the Ancient, Middle and Modern Ages, was once Lisbon's birthplace and is one of the best viewpoints in the city.

If, on the one hand, as a former military building, it could represent rigidity, impenetrability and resistance, on the other hand, it is characterized by a high degree of adaptability and versatility from all changes imposed either by its historic marks or by the natural disasters that shook its structures.

Castelo de São Jorge sits right on top of Lisbon's first and most prominent hill, with an amazing view of the whole downtown area.

Once inside the castle, it is very intriguing to imagine that Lisbon was once a Muslim territory, during the Middle Ages.

The regular ticket costs 15€.
