Location:

The West Head Coastal Trail is located near Greens Beach in north-west Tasmania in the Narawntapu Nationalpark. The trailhead is accessible via the main road, with parking available at the start of the walk. It's best to park at Greens Beach, the small trail starts from there and is well sign posted.

Hike length:

Approximately 5 km return, taking around 1.5–2 hours depending on pace and time spent enjoying the coastal views.

Difficulty Level:

Easy to moderate — the trail is mostly well-formed with some gentle slopes and uneven terrain. Suitable for most walkers, including families, though sturdy footwear is recommended for rocky sections.

Dogs allowed:

No, dogs are not permitted in the area.

Entry cost / Park passes:

A valid parks pass is required for entry to Tasmania’s national parks. For example:

  • A Daily Pass (up to 24 hours): Per vehicle (up to 8 people) costs AUD $47.70. A per‑person pass (travelling by bus, cycle or on foot) costs AUD $23.85

• A Holiday Pass (up to 2 months): Per vehicle (up to 8 people) costs AUD $95.50. Per person (travelling by bus/cycle/foot) costs AUD $47.75
This “holiday” option gives you access to all Tasmanian national parks for up to two months from the start date.
Note: Prices may change, so it’s best to check the official site before you go.

More information:

The West Head Coastal Trail follows the scenic coastline, offering views over the Bass Strait, nearby islands and sandy beaches. Along the trail, you’ll pass through coastal heathland, low cliffs, and occasional forested sections. There are multiple stunning viewpoints along the trail.

The walk is ideal for wildlife spotting, with opportunities to see wallabies, pademelons, seabirds, shorebirds, and marine life in the distance. It’s particularly enjoyable at sunrise or sunset, when the light enhances the rugged coastline and ocean vistas.

This trail makes for a peaceful, off-the-beaten-path coastal walk, and can be combined with a visit to nearby Greens Beach for a full morning or afternoon outing.
