Tucked away on the stunning Milford Road, Monkey Creek is a must-stop spot that feels made for the camera. This roadside rest area offers sweeping mountain views and unbelievably clear water that, on still days, turns into a perfect mirror of the surrounding peaks. It’s the kind of place where you can pause, breathe in the alpine air, and let the scenery take over.
These photos were taken right beside the road, but there’s more to explore among the tussock and alpine plants nearby. Just make sure to stick to the marked paths so the fragile vegetation stays protected.
Monkey Creek is also a favourite for wildlife encounters. With a bit of luck, you might spot kea—the playful alpine parrots—or catch sight of native ducks and other birds gliding across the stream. Remember: never feed kea, and if one hops on your car or gear, wait until it safely moves off before driving away. Sadly, too many have been injured otherwise.
Photography tip: Bring a wide-angle lens for the sweeping landscapes and a zoom lens if you’re hoping to capture wildlife.
