Lake Mangamahoe is one of the most accessible places to enjoy sweeping views of Mount Taranaki. The lake is framed by lush native bush, and on calm days the mountain reflects perfectly in the water, making it a must-visit for anyone after that classic Taranaki shot.

You can drive directly to the lake, and if you want to explore further there’s a 6 km walking track around the shoreline. Along the way you’ll discover a variety of vantage points where the mountain reveals itself from different angles.

For a higher perspective, head to the Lake Mangamahoe Lookout. It’s only a five-minute walk from the lookout car park, following the circuit track and turning right up the stairs instead of towards the dam. From the top, you’ll get a beautifully framed view of Mount Taranaki rising above the forest and lake.

Keep in mind the reserve has locked gates in the evenings, so you’ll need to plan around the opening hours if you’re aiming for golden hour shots. The gates are open from 7am–8.30pm in summer and 7am–6pm in winter.

Photography info: Sunrise and sunset are the best times to capture the lake and mountain, as the colours of the sky and soft light bring the scene to life. Calm conditions are ideal for securing that flawless reflection, and the lookout offers an elevated composition where the forest, lake, and Mount Taranaki line up perfectly in frame.
