The Ōmarama Clay Cliffs are one of the most striking natural wonders in the Waitaki Valley. These dramatic pinnacles and ridges, made up of layers of gravel and silt left behind by ancient glaciers more than a million years ago, rise sharply from the landscape and feel almost otherworldly.

You’ll find them just off State Highway 8. From Ōmarama township, head north and turn onto Quailburn Road, then follow Henburn Road until you reach the entrance gate. The cliffs sit on private land, and there’s a donation box at the gate where you can pop in a $5 fee per vehicle.

📸 Photography tip: A wide-angle lens is your best friend here to capture the sheer scale of the formations. Inside the cliffs it can get quite shady, so visiting late morning or afternoon will give you the best light.
