The Mercer Bay Loop Track is one of Auckland’s most spectacular coastal walks, combining dramatic clifftop views with a short but rewarding hike. Starting just outside Piha, the track winds through lush native bush before opening up to sweeping views over the Tasman Sea. At its highest points, the cliffs here are among the tallest in the Auckland region, dropping sharply to the ocean far below.
The loop itself is about 2 km and takes around 45–60 minutes at a relaxed pace, though you’ll want extra time to stop for photos or just soak in the scenery. The path is well-marked, with some steep sections and stairways, so a moderate level of fitness is helpful. Good shoes are recommended, as parts of the trail can be slippery after rain.
One of the highlights is the lookout point, where you’ll get a panoramic view stretching from Piha in the north down to Whatipu in the south. Sunset is especially beautiful here, with the sun dropping straight into the sea.
Because it’s a loop, you don’t have to backtrack—simply follow the track around and enjoy a mix of bush, cliffside, and coastal outlooks. It’s a relatively short hike but packs in some of the most dramatic scenery on Auckland’s west coast.
