Call it That Wanaka Tree, The Wanaka Willow, or simply The Wanaka Tree—whatever name you use, everyone knows the iconic little willow growing out of Lake Wānaka on New Zealand’s South Island.
Its story began more than 80 years ago when it was just a fence post planted by a local farmer. Over time, it took root and grew into one of the most photographed trees in the world. With its fame, however, has come some damage—both accidental and deliberate—prompting locals to put up signs asking visitors not to climb it.
You’ll find the tree only a short 3–4 minute walk from the Wānaka Rotary Playground. There’s parking nearby, and from there it’s just a 100-metre stroll along the lake track to the spot.
📸 Photography tip: Sunrise is the best time to capture the tree—soft golden light, fewer crowds, and a chance to frame it against the surrounding mountains.
