You can still walk as far as the Mueller Lake Lookout, which is just before the first bridge.
DOC plans to reopen the full track once the new second bridge is finished, which is expected around autumn 2026.
The Hooker Valley Track is one of the most popular and accessible walks in Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park — and a definite must for photos.
The trail is about 4 km each way, with an easy gradient (around 1.5 hours one way). At the end, you’ll find yourself at Hooker Lake with Aoraki/Mount Cook towering above. Along the way, you’ll have constant mountain views and plenty of photo stops, including the Hooker River, Mount Sefton, Mueller Lake, and Hooker Lake. It’s a great option if you want to be surrounded by the Southern Alps without tackling a strenuous hike.
Bring both a wide-angle and zoom lens if you’re into photography. Sunrise and sunset (“golden hours”) are the best times for light.
The track is well-formed and suitable for wheelchairs and buggies, crossing three swing bridges and passing two lookouts along the 10 km return route. Be sure to dress for alpine conditions, as the weather can change quickly, and note that the track sometimes closes when conditions are unsafe.
