One of the main waterways flowing from the mountain is the Hangatahua River, also called the Stoney River, which winds its way out to the Tasman Sea.
To reach one of the best viewpoints along this river, head to the Blue Rata Reserve near Ōakura. The access road, Saunders Road, is gravel and a bit rough in places—manageable in a 2WD, but much more comfortable with a 4WD. About 200 metres in, look for an unmarked pull-off on the right where you can park before following a short bush track that leads to a stretch of sand and boulders along the riverbank.
📸: This is a fantastic spot to frame Mount Taranaki with the river flowing in the foreground, creating a dramatic composition. Sunset brings out the best colours here, so aim to shoot in the evening. It's also great for astrophotgraphy. A zoom lens will help you capture both the mountain’s detail and the sweeping scene.
