Cape Egmont Lighthouse is a must-visit spot for anyone wanting to frame Mount Taranaki in a truly unique way. The pairing of the historic lighthouse with the mountain’s perfect cone makes for a scene you won’t find anywhere else.
In winter, the mountain’s snowy summit mirrors the crisp white of the lighthouse, creating an almost storybook-like atmosphere on the coast. The lighthouse itself has stood since 1881 and sits about 50 km southwest of New Plymouth. You’ll find a small carpark at the end of Cape Road, just steps away from the coastal views.
📸: I’ve shot here at both sunrise and sunset, and while the mountain is stunning no matter the time, sunset offers especially beautiful light across its slopes. A mid-range zoom lens works best for balancing both the lighthouse and the mountain in your frame.
