Harwoods Hole is one of the most impressive natural wonders in the Nelson/Tasman region—New Zealand’s deepest vertical shaft at over 350 metres. Hidden away in the remote hills of Takaka Hill, the site feels raw and almost otherworldly, with dense beech forest and limestone cliffs surrounding the enormous chasm. Standing at the edge, peering into the darkness below, is both humbling and slightly unnerving—it’s the kind of place that makes you realise how small you are compared to nature.
The track to Harwoods Hole takes about 45 minutes one way from the Canaan Downs carpark. It’s a relatively flat walk through native bush, weaving over limestone outcrops and mossy forest floor, before opening out to the rim of the hole itself. The track also leads to a viewpoint above Gorge Creek, offering sweeping views across Golden Bay that are just as rewarding as the hole itself.
Because of the sheer drop, extreme caution is needed near the edge—there are no barriers. While the hole is a favourite among experienced cavers and abseilers, most visitors come simply to marvel at its scale from above. A wide-angle lens is great for capturing the surrounding landscape, while a zoom will help frame the depth and detail of the cliffs.
