Cape Farewell Lookout sits at the very top of the South Island, and the views are incredible. From the platform you can see the Tasman Sea stretching out, golden sand dunes, dramatic cliffs, and rugged rocky formations.

The walk from the carpark is only about five minutes, making it one of the easiest ways to experience the northernmost point of the island—and the scenery definitely makes it worth the stop.

In 2020, the Wharariki Ecosanctuary was set up here, creating a predator-free space that protects seabirds, rare native plants, giant snails, and geckos. Because it’s tucked away in such a remote corner, you’ll often have the place almost to yourself.

📸 Photography tip: Sunrise is best, but sunset works too, especially for colourful skies behind the cliffs. Shoot with a 16–35mm wide-angle lens and use ND filters to smooth out the ocean.
