Pōkōkura Saddle is one of Taranaki’s most scenic lookouts, offering a stunning perspective of the central North Island.
Situated on the Forgotten World Highway (SH43) between Stratford and Taumarunui, the saddle is the highest point of the road and a must-stop if you’re driving this iconic route. On a clear day, you’ll get sweeping views of Mount Taranaki to the west and the central plateau mountains to the east.
This is a quick roadside stop rather than a hike, but its elevation and views make it a perfect spot to stretch your legs and soak in the scenery.
📸 Photography tip: Pōkōkura Saddle is drone-friendly (check weather and CAA rules first!) and ideal for aerial shots. The sweeping ridgelines and winding road look incredible from above, especially at sunrise or sunset when the light softens the surrounding hills. Even without a drone, a wide-angle lens works well to capture the dramatic vistas.
