Strathmore Saddle is one of those underrated spots in Taranaki that gives you some of the best mountain views without even leaving the car.
Located along State Highway 43 (The Forgotten World Highway), this lookout sits on a high ridge between Stratford and Whangamōmona. On a clear day, you get panoramic views of Mount Taranaki, the surrounding farmland, and even out to Ruapehu in the distance.
You don’t need to hike to enjoy it — just pull over at the lookout sign and take in the sweeping views. It’s a perfect quick stop on a road trip if you’re heading along SH43.
📸 Photography tip: This is a brilliant place to fly a drone, as the open ridgeline gives you a chance to capture epic wide shots of the valley and the mountain in the same frame. Sunrise and sunset are especially good for dramatic lighting.
